Brush Pen Breakdown: 3 Pen Sizes to Try

Hi friend,

Have you ever watched a video online or someone doing hand lettering and wondered, what pen is that? πŸ€”πŸ–Š

Well that is the question that I get asked most of all on my Instagram videos, and to be honest when you are first starting with lettering the number of different brush pens can be daunting.

So I want to give you a breakdown of my 3 favorite brush pens for hand lettering.

Let's do it!

Number 1: Small Hard Tip Pen

Meet the Tombow Fudenosuke Brush pen. This pen has a harder (but still flexible!) and smaller brush tip than the other two pens on this list, so it's the easiest to use like a regular pen as you are getting used to brush lettering. You can use pressure to transition from thick to thin lines.

Since these pens are smaller, they are great for little lettering projects like bullet or Bible journaling, making envelopes or place cards, or taking notes.

We sell these pens in a colorful 10-pack that I love to use with our Set of 3 Perfect Lettering Notebooks - they are the perfect size to pair together!

See all of our small brush pens here.

Number 2: Medium Pitt Artist Pen

This might be my favorite brush pen of all time: the Faber-Castell Pitt Artist Brush Pen! This pen is my go-to for SO many projects. Its medium size brush tip is perfect for creating smooth, full brush strokes.

I love using these pens with our Top Spiral Notebooks - I store one in the roomy spiral on the top of the notebook so I am ready to go for any lettering that I want to work on.

Since I'm so in love with these pens, we carry them in a bunch of different color sets on my site. You can find them in jewel tones, brights, primary colors and of course the old staple: black.

See all medium brush pens here.

Number 3: Large Dual Brush Pen

You get two pens in one with this pen, which I just love! The Tombow Dual Brush Pen is great for big, loopy lettering that really makes a statement.

One thing that you can do with the bullet tip end of these pens is to come back and add a little shadow line to your lettering. It adds a little bit more dimension and flair which is kind of a fun thing to try.

This pen comes in some of my favorite colors sets: one is called "Desert Flora" which is perfect for me here in Arizona! Another is called "Citrus" and since I have 3 orange trees, a lemon tree and a lime tree in my backyard, I have a soft spot for this one too!

So there you have it: my top 3 brush pens. πŸ–ŠπŸ–ŠπŸ–Š

But I know you have a big question coming...

How do I know which pen is right for me? πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Well the truth is that you really do need to test out the different sized pens to see which one feels most comfortable for you.

That is why I created my Perfect Pen Pouch Starter Kit!

The kit comes with one of EACH of these three pens, so you get all 3 sizes to try out and test. You also get to choose between two super pretty pouch designs, and the pouch is very roomy so it will fit all 3 pens plus plenty more if you end up starting a little pen collection. πŸ₯°πŸ–Š

Here are the two pouch designs:
